Article: The High Cost Of Free WiFi

Whoa, I don't think Dorothy wrote this article in a coffee shop. Though for me I don't see a huge difference between this and reading a broadsheet - same problem, and should simply be managed by the coffee shop.

In case you spill coffee in the car

Now, this is funny!!
pump espresso machines

Well, there I was minding my own business on the Starbucks Patio when all of a sudden a gentleman jumps out of his Porsche, quite upset and cursing up a storm, he'd spilt coffee on his interior. He parked his car and walked back in to get a coffee cup with a better lid on it, and he stopped to chit-chat and unwind, he was pretty upset when he said to me;

"Darn [not the exact word he used] this Coffee Lid, It Popped Off, and Now Coffee is All Over My Seat"

http://EzineArticles.com/?Darn-this-Coffee-Lid---It-Popped-Off,-and-Now-Coffee-is-All-Over-My-Seat-He-Said&id=5159017

Coffee shop injuries

This shouldnt be funny but hey:

People have been drinking coffee and tea for centuries in various cultures across the world. Many people consider coffee or tea consumption to be a vital part of their daily routine. However, the temperatures at which coffee and tea are served has risen substantially with the use of machines that can super-heat the milk with steam.

Coffee shops can be great places to hang out, study, or conduct group meetings. However, there are certain hazards that can result in moderate to severe injuries. Some coffee shop dangers stem from:

  • Super-heated milk
  • Coffee warmers set too hot
  • Drink or machine spills
  • Over-crowding

Injuries in a coffee shop can be the result of negligence or careless errors on the part of management or staff. A set of safety standards should be observed by all staff on a daily basis to minimize risk of injury.

Safety Standards

Coffee shop staff, including baristas and managers, should observe proper safety standards to ensure that their customers stay out of harm's way. For example, baristas should not heat the milk or coffee higher than necessary. If the coffee is extra hot, they should tell you. If a spill happens, they should mop it up as soon as they can.

YES, I HAVE peanut butter all over my face.

No, it wasn’t any fun. But let’s put that aside for a moment.

Mom probably told you that peanut butter sticks to the roof of your mouth. But did she also tell you that it could be used to remove stickiness, like stubborn price tags or paper labels?

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Coffee and tea lovers may have a decreased likelihood of developing the most common form of malignant brain tumor in adults, a new study suggests.

The findings, from a study of more than 500,000 European adults, add to evidence from a recent U.S. study linking higher coffee and tea intake to a lower risk of gliomas, a group of brain tumors that makes up about 80 percent of malignant brain cancers in adults.

MoJo Should Be Standard For Every Roaster

MoJo Should Be Standard For Every Roaster

Posted on September 12, 2010 by Mike

There are a lot of variables involved during roasting. Ambient temperatures change, batch sizes change, drop temps change, etc. If you’re tracking as many details as possible, why wouldn’t you use MoJoToGo as well? It can determine very quickly when changes in development occur, changes that prohibit proper extraction in the cup. I’ve said before that I believe MoJoToGo can help you maintain your equipment. Roasting is another example where having objective analysis is worth every penny of investment. This past summer I was able to identify very quickly that there were problems with some local coffees (most likely due to an extreme heat wave that rose the ambient temperatures of the roastery). Because they don’t objectively analyze every (or any) batch that they roast, it was difficult for them to understand why their coffees didn’t taste as good as usual. Chris Tacy reminded me of this experience when he brought up the very same subject on Twitter. In a perfect world every batch is as similar as possible, based on your predetermined profile. But it’s very difficult to get it right every time. If you’re testing everything, MoJoToGo will identify the blown batches right away.

Does Waiting in Line Affect Your Perception of Quality?

ShotZombies

It’s not unusual for people to wait in long lines to purchase products that they want. Coffee, burgers, even iPhones. But what affect are these lines actually having? Do you see a long line and think to yourself that the product must be worth it? When you finally get to the front of that line, does the reward seem sweeter? The average wait for a burger at Shake Shack is so long (over an hour) they added a web-cam to their site so you can check the status of the line before showing up.

From Time Out Chicago:

“What the line does is sensitize the consumer to the experience,” Fine says. “And [people are] going to pay attention to the food. That attention can wind up being positive or negative, but in general they’ve invested that time, so they are prone to say—sociopsychologically—that that investment was worthwhile. So they’re prone to say: This is great pizza. Because only an idiot would stand that long in line if the pizza was only so-so.”

Same goes for the burgers, the churros and the cocktails.

Of course, it can go the other way, too. “If the pizza for them is unsatisfying, [people] will probably treat it more negatively than they otherwise might have,” Fine says. “It eliminates the middle ground.”

Personally, I have limited patience for waiting in lines. I prefer avoiding them by visiting during off hours whenever possible. But I’m always willing when I think the product is worth it.

When enclosed in a small environment (like a cafe) it’s important that those that are waiting don’t perceive their time to be wasted. Maybe they don’t understand the dozens of variables that you’re trying to control in your espresso, but they do understand when certain no-no’s take place. And after waiting so long, “[people] will probably treat it more negatively than they otherwise might have”. And then of course, they blast you online.

Coffee and Smokes May Help You Live Longer, If You Don’t Die First

By Jen Doll, Fri., Sep. 10 2010 @ 3:37PM
500full.jpg Oh, hey! Special for you this Friday: From Scientific American…When University of Washington scientists fed coffee and tobacco extracts to fruit flies, they found that their dopamine cells (which keep you from getting Parkinson’s) survived and their little fly life spans increased. What do you know, human studies also indicate that adults who chug the coffee and suck the ciggies have a lower risk of Parkinson’s! (Although they’re often a little on the twitchy — er, energetic — side.)

Although neither nicotine or caffeine were found to be the actual protective substances themselves, they contained “promising compounds,” so, there’s that. Promising, indeed: To coffee and smoking! To not looking like Iggy Pop! Unless, of course, you want to!

On the other side of things, if you seem to have an infestation of fruit flies, don’t offer them a drag or a cuppa.

Coffee ice cream liqueur pie

Coffee ice cream liqueur pie
Photo: foodnetwork

This 6th day of September commemorates a food holiday referred to as the National Coffee Ice Cream Day. How fabulous that we can enjoy two of our favorite things together on this special day. Coffee and ice cream! Wow!

This is a cool, frosty dessert that grownups and coffee lovers will simply fall in love with. A few ingredients and in a very short time a new and delicious, creamy just refreshing pie will be created by your own hand.

Ingredients:

Crust: • 30 chocolate wafers (crushed) • ½ cup of softened butter
• 1/3 cup of finely chopped macadamia nuts
• ¼ cup of flaked coconut

Filling: • 1 quart slightly softened coffee flavored ice cream • 6 tablespoons of coffee flavored liqueur • Topping:
• 1 cup of hot fudge sundae sauce
• 1 handful of whole macadamia nuts

Directions:

Crust: 1. In a large mixing bowl add the crushed chocolate wafers, coconut, chopped nuts and butter.
2. Mix the ingredients well and press into a pie pan that is either 8 or 9 inches in diameter.
3. Place the pie pan into the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes to chill and firm up a little.

Filling:
1. Transfer the slightly softened ice cream into a large mixing bowl.
2. Add the coffee flavored liquor and mix well. Do this quickly so the ice cream does not melt too much.

Prepare completed pie: 1. Spoon the coffee-coffee ice cream into the pie pan over the crust. 2. Cover pie with plastic wrap and place in the freezer to harden. 3. Allow coffee ice cream liqueur pie to set in freezer for at least 2 hours or until pie is plenty firm. 4. When ready to serve remove pie from freezer and drizzle hot fudge sundae sauce over the top. 5. Sprinkle with whole macadamia nuts and adorn your table with this cool delight.
6. Slice pie as you would any other pie and serve your family, friends or guests.
7. Enjoy!

Suggestions:

• Flaked coconut is optional. The pie crust will be just as good without it. • Save time and buy a premade chocolate graham cracker crust. • Any nut will do, the best results noticed are with macadamia, cashews and almonds. • Another topping option is to sprinkle a few coffee flavored coffee beans or jelly beans on top of the pie. • Add a few white chocolate – chocolate chips on top of the hot fudge sundae sauce to add an extra sweet bite and bring some color contrast to the pie top. • If children are going to be served it might be best to leave out the liqueur. Leave it in when only adults will be served. • Kahlua can also be substituted if your favorite coffee flavored liqueur is not available or on hand.
• With any frozen ice cream cake or pie, removed from freezer 10-15 minutes before serving. It will make slicing the pie so much easier.
• Of course, a topping of whipped cream will add to the look and taste of this dessert.

Coffee. Cheaper Than Crack T-Shirt

by Mike on September 1, 2010 in Coffee Accessories

I have an addiction to coffee and a growing t-shirt collection. T-shirts with bands that’s no one has ever heard of, more NY Yankees t-shirts than one person should ever have, but not enough coffee shirts. This t-shirt from Coy Clothes, titled “Coffee Junkie” helps solve my coffee t-shirt shortage.

Coffee? Crack? Coffee. Hands down. Here we have a medium, charcoal slim fit shirt with a cream coffee patch. The “too damn close” patch in the back collar gently reminds people to keep their distance.

- Coy Clothes Description

The shirt from Coy Clothes isn’t cheap, $45 but it is made out of bamboo. It’s comfortable to wear and easy on the earth.

Coy Clothes has one other coffee shirt, “Are We Out Of Coffee?” They also have other retro images that range from sweet to naughty and a catchy text to go with it.

Huge thanks to Coy Clothes for sharing one of their t-shirts with me.

Expert tips for brewing great-tasting coffee at home

(ARA) - Have you ever brewed a cup of coffee at home and wished it tasted as good as the cup you get from your favorite cafe? A lot of steps go into making the perfect cup of coffee, but they are all simple ones you can follow at home.

"Baristas use a set of quality standards to handcraft the best, most consistent cup of coffee every time," explains Jason Simpson of Starbucks. "With the right brewing knowledge and a little bit of practice, anyone can make a great cup of coffee in their own kitchen."
